Plat Pays is a large tricolor shawl. It is a symmetrical triangular shawl that is worked back and forth from top to bottom with 3 different colors of DK-weight yarn: 2 shades from the same color palette and a contrasting one. 
 
Le Plat Pays is a song by Jacques Brel. This song is a description about how Belgium (my country) may seem to be flat and boring but, yet, the people, the cultural variety, the atmosphere and even the landscapes make it dynamic. I tried to give the same impression with this pattern by playing with colors, mixing simple knit stitch patterns and different textures and making it dynamic by knitting with short rows or slipping all stitches to the other end of the needle to knit them again. Only 4 different stitches are used to make it: knit, purl, yarn over and k2tog.
 
The model is accessible to curious beginners. Explanations are given row by row.
 
Yarn:
3 skeins of DK weight yarn in 3 different colorways or about 785 y/720 m of DK weight yarn.
Sample was knit using ByNightCreations Orion DK (75% Bluefaced Leicester / 25% Mid-Brown Masham – 100 g/240 m/262 y). 
C1: Madder Root light – light orange - 260y / 240m
C2: Madder Root dark – orange - 260y / 240m
C3: Myrobolan – lime green - 260y / 240m
 
Needles:  4,5mm / US #7 circular needle
 
Gauge (after blocking) :  16 sts. x 20 rows = 10 cm / 4” in stockinette stitch  
(Gauge is not necessary but a different one will affect the size of the finished shawl or the amount of yarn used)
 
Size : Width : 220cm/87" - Height : 95cm/37,5"
 
Notions: 3 stitch markers, scissors, darning needle and pins for blocking

Plat Pays est un grand châle tricolore. C’est un triangle symétrique qui se tricote en allers-retours de haut en bas avec 3 couleurs de laine DK: 2 nuances d’une même couleur et une couleur contrastante. 
 
Le Plat Pays est une chanson de l’immense Jacques Brel qui décrit combien la Belgique (mon pays), et plus particulièrement le Nord, peut sembler plat et ennuyeux mais les gens, les mélanges de culture, l’athmosphère et même les paysages le rendent dynamique et animé. C’est ce que j’ai voulu représenter avec ce modèle en jouant avec les couleurs et en mélangeant des points de tricot simples et différentes textures tout en changeant le rythme et le sens du tricot grâce à des rangs raccourcis ou des mailles glissées d’un bout à l’autre de l’aiguille pour les tricoter à nouveau. Seuls 4 points sont utilisés pour le réaliser: maille endroit, maille envers, jeté et 2 mailles ensemble.

Laine:
3 écheveaux de laine de type DK de 3 différentes couleurs ou environ 720 m/785 y de laine d’épaisseur DK.
Le modèle présenté a été tricot avec 3 écheveaux de ByNightCreations Orion DK (75% Bluefaced Leicester / 25% Mid-Brown Masham – 100 g/240 m/262 y).

Aiguilles: Aiguilles circulaires 4,5mm / US #7 
 
Echantillon (après blocage) : 16 m. x 20 rangs = 10 cm / 4” en jersey endroit  
(L’échantillon n’est pas indispensable mais un changement d’échantillon affectera la taille finale du châle et la quantité de laine utilisée)
